Sunart Centre News - February 2019

Our FRIDAY NIGHT CINEMA film on Friday 22nd February is WADJDA, a 2012 Saudi Arabian drama written and directed by Haifaa al-Mansour. It was the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first feature-length film made by a female Saudi director. It won numerous awards at film festivals around the world. The film was selected as the Saudi Arabian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards (the first time the country made a submission for the Oscars, but it was not nominated. It successfully earned a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 2014 BAFTA Awards.

An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest.

Certificate PG, run time 1hour 38 minutes, comedy / drama. Start time 7:30pm, tickets £5 (under 18s £3) at the door

On Monday 25th February we host a double bill production from the excellent MULL THEATRE; the world premiere of THE ELECTRIFYING MR JOHNSTON by Robert Dawson Scott and BITE-SIZE (script-in-hand play excerpts).

THE ELECTRIFYING MR JOHNSTON is a new play about one of Scotland’s great unsung heroes, Tom Johnston, once described by Churchill as the 'King of Scotland', focusing on his struggles to bring “light to the glens.” Through incredible feats of engineering and political manoeuvring he sought to transform the lives of everyone in the north of Scotland by bringing hydroelectric power to the Highlands & Islands. A story of power - and the struggle for it.

BITE-SIZE is an informal programme of script-in-hand play readings of new plays and works-in-progress. Readings, encounters, questions & answers, feedback and chat offers the audience the chance to be part of and enjoy the fun of the creative process. It aims to connect with all of the audience and may be of particular interest to writers, poets, writers’ groups, wordsmiths and theatre-makers.

Start time 7:30pm tickets £10 (OAPs & under 18s £8) at the door only.

High Life Highland staffing for the Sunart Centre and wider area is gradually falling into place, with the appointment of a new Youth Development Officer (part time) Alan Gray, who will be taking up post at the end of January. Alan also has a post as Relief Centre Supervisor for the Sunart Centre, joining our team of Sean Turner, Pat Adams, Laura McConnachie and Hollie Taylor. Active Schools Co-Ordinator Fiona Beattie is now off on maternity leave and we hope that by the time this issue of DtD appears we will have cover in place to continue Fiona’s good work until she returns.
